SUMMARY:Pharmacy History Workgroup - Two Apothecaries at a Crossroads: Medicinal Plants and the Diverging Futures of Pharmacy\, 1880-1939
DESCRIPTION:AIHP and Consortium of History\, Science\, Technology and Medicine Pharmacy Workgroup Event\nWednesday\, October 21\, 2026\, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm CDT\n\n\n\nPresentation Title: Two Apothecaries at a Crossroads: Medicinal Plants and the Diverging Futures of Pharmacy\, 1880–1939 \nSpeaker: Dr. Matti Leprêtre\, Fulbright Scholar at New York University and a historian of science and pharmacy. He received his PhD in History of Science from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in 2026. \nCreate your account and login here. \nDescription: What happened to medicinal plants when pharmacy became a global industry? At the turn of the twentieth century\, plants acquired several possible futures: they could remain raw drugs identified by apothecaries; become crops reorganized by experimental science; serve as industrial resources from which ever more substances were extracted; or be reimagined as therapeutic wholes whose action exceeded that of any isolated constituent. \nThis paper follows those transformations through two apothecaries who stood at the center of modern pharmacy but have rarely been considered together. Carl Scriba directed the plant-based factories of E. Merck\, then the world’s second-largest pharmaceutical company and a global leader in medicines derived from plants. Alexander Tschirch was one of the most influential figures in the transformation of academic pharmacy and pharmacognosy in the German-speaking world and beyond. Viewed from Scriba’s factory and Tschirch’s university institute\, medicinal plants emerge as contested scientific\, commercial\, and therapeutic objects. \nThe First World War briefly drew their projects together\, as shortages made plant supply a common problem for apothecaries\, scientists\, manufacturers\, and states. Their later fortunes diverged sharply. Scriba’s industrial order was dismantled\, and its architect largely disappeared from historical memory. Tschirch remained a celebrated patriarch\, while his language of plant complexity migrated into phytotherapy and\, under National Socialism\, toward increasingly ideological\, vitalist\, and mystical claims about wholeness. Their crossed lives reveal not only what an apothecary could become\, but what a medicinal plant could become when pharmacy became an industry. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Symposium: “German Influences on Wellness\, Health\, and Pharmaceuticals in America”
DESCRIPTION:University of Wisconsin-Madison\nMemorial Library\, Room 126\n728 State Street\nMadison\, WI \nFree and open to the public; no registration required to attend in person. \nRegister for the livestream here. \nView the symposium program here. \nGerman influences on wellness\, health\, and pharmaceuticals in America have a long history. In the 19th and early 20th centuries\, immigrants brought traditional healing practices and new medical knowledge with them\, while Americans traveled to German universities to study the latest scientific developments. For two days\, this symposium will bring together scholars from Europe and the United States to explore these transatlantic transfers of knowledge in the areas of home remedies and pharmaceuticals\, naturopathy and exercise\, midwifery\, and medical treatment. The symposium concludes with an exhibit of archival materials from the collections of the Max Kade Institute and the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. \nIf you have questions\, contact Antje Petty: apetty@wisc.edu \nThe symposium has been made possible thanks to generous support by the Max Kade Foundation\, New York. It is cosponsored by the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy; the Department of German\, Nordic\, Slavic+ at the University of Wisconsin–Madison; and by the Friends of the Max Kade Institute. \n
