AIHP will annually sponsor two PhD or PharmD candidates for onsite research visits to utilitze our historical collections. Each fellowship award is up to $3,500.

This opportunity will enable researchers to engage with a vibrant collection that ranges from rare pharamceutical artifacts to institutional pharmacy education documents and international pharmaceutical exchange materials.

PhD Research Support grant guidelines

  • Applicants must be affiliated with a North American institution. (US citizenship is NOT required).
  • PhD candidates must be ABD by the time the award is granted. Projects need not focus on American history but must be clearly and significantly related to the history of pharmacy or pharmaceuticals, broadly defined.
  • PharmD candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in history and propose a clearly defined project or a set of learning objectives. If the project is not part of a dissertation project, applicants should explain how the research contributes to their career trajectory.

Fellowship Duration and Deliverables

  • Fellows may stay up to three weeks (minimum recommended stay: one week). AIHP is closed on weekends.
  • Fellows are expected to:
    • Present work in a seminar (virtual or in-person). Engage with graduate students and faculty during weekly History of Science, Medicine and Technology meetings.

Application Deadline & Award Period

  • Deadline to apply: January 9, 2026
  • Award usage period: Must be used during calendar year 2026.

Application Guidelines (Max 4 pages, PDF format)

  • Contact Informatin: Name, mailing address, email, phone number, university affiliation, expected degree, major area of specialization, and exepected graduation date.
  • Project Overview: Tentative title and brief prospectus, including expected outcomes or skills gained through the fellowship.
  • Narrative Statement: Describe the significance of your research to the history of pharmacy or pharmaceuticals and the activities that the grant will support. Specify which files/artifacts/photographs within our holdings are of interest (be as specific as possible).
  • Budget: Itemized and annotated estimate of expenses (up to $3,500). Include a brief statement of other financial support received or applied for to be used within the fellowship period.
  • Letter of Support: A faculty member or supervisor should submit a Letter of Support via email (may be sent separately).
