As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, explore our Nation’s contributions to health and progress with the digital AIHP Atlas of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical History. The Atlas is freely available at aihp.org/Atlas. AIHP is the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, based at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

The AIHP Atlas of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical History tells the bite-sized stories of key events in the history of pharmaceutical discovery, medication use, pharmacy practice, pharmacy education, pharmacy associations, and related activities, emphasizing North America yet globally inclusive.

The Atlas shows the locations of more than 2,500 key events in America’s pharmacy heritage. The digital global map can be moved, expanded, squeezed, or filtered across 10 categories as the viewer desires. Search functions will find pins based on title or description.

Zoom in to the street level! Contents include both scientific history as well as popular culture. Learn how malted milk, the Jeep, tetanus & fireworks, margarine, W.C. Fields, spiced rum, Hawaii’s ABC Stores, jazz, Schwab’s Pharmacy, Memphis Red Sox, Arsenius Jigger, Montgolfier balloons, Breck shampoo, and absinthe each connect to pharmacy. And so much more!

For the Revolutionary War, contrast apothecary general Andrew Craigie with apothecary traitor Benedict Arnold. There are two ice cream sundae pins, one for the chocolate version of the story (Wisconsin) and one for the cherry version (Ithaca). Zoom in! Explore. Have fun!

The AIHP Atlas of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical History continues to grow as more pins are added. Viewers are welcome to nominate additional pins at aihp.org/atlas. The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy provides crucial map-making expertise. Look for your city or filter for categories you prefer.
