Located in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy at 777 Highland Ave, Madison, WI 53705, AIHP is home to collections of manuscripts, artifacts, and reference materials to preserve and share the stories of pharmacy’s past, publishes the peer-reviewed journal History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals, and sponsors programs, grants, and awards that advance research and teaching.
Our space brings together pharmacists, researchers, students, and historians to explore the people, objects, and ideas that have shaped the profession.
The American Institute of the History of Pharmacy has been housed within the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy since its founding in 1941. Today, AIHP occupies a combination of public and staff workspaces that support research, collections care, and public engagement.
Our primary public space is the Main Space, which is currently undergoing renovation following flood damage. When construction is complete, it will serve as a welcoming area for visitors, researchers, and guests, providing space to exhibit archival materials and artifacts, work with materials, and engage with our collections.
Behind the scenes, AIHP maintains several staff-only areas that support the care and management of our collections. These include the Kremers Reference Library, which houses the archives and much of the library collection; a processing room, where newly acquired collections are assessed and prepared for long-term storage; and dedicated artifact storage areas.
AIHP also shares use of the Urdang Room with the School of Pharmacy for meetings, events, and other activities.

The spaces we occupy today reflect more than eighty-five years of AIHP history.
Originally located in Chamberlin Hall in the heart of the UW-Madison campus, AIHP moved with the School of Pharmacy to its current home at 777 Highland Avenue in 2001. Since then, our spaces have continued to evolve to meet the needs of our collections, staff, researchers, and visitors.
In August 2025, AIHP experienced a significant flood that affected several collection and work areas. Recovery efforts remain ongoing as we restore spaces, preserve collections, and reimagine how visitors will experience AIHP in the future.
