AIHP Successfully Completes Inaugural “Kreminar” Lecture Series

AIHP and the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Pharmacy recently completed the inaugural Edward Kremers Seminar in the History of Pharmacy & Drugs. The Summer 2020 “Kreminar” lecture series was a “smashing success,” according to AIHP’s Historical Director Lucas Richert, PhD, the George Urdang Chair in the History of Pharmacy at the UW–Madison School of Pharmacy.

Organized by Professor Richert, the Kreminar explores the history of pharmacy, pharmaceuticals, drugs, and medicines. The series features authors and scholars discussing their latest research projects and draws upon history to inform contemporary understandings and debates about pharmacy, drugs, and medicines.

The Summer 2020 Kreminar series explored the theme of cannabis through streamed online presentations and discussions by five scholars writing about the global history of cannabis:

• Dr. Lina Britto: “Marijuana Boom: The Rise & Fall of Colombia’s First Drug Paradise.”
• Dr. Chris Duvall: “The African Roots of Marijuana.”
• Dr. Emily Dufton: “Grassroots: A History of Marijuana’s Ups and Downs in America.”
• Dr. Adam Rathge: “Cannabis Cures: Medical Jurisprudence and the Origins of the War on Drugs.”
• Dr. David Guba: “Taming Cannabis: Drugs and Empire in Nineteenth-Century France.”

The inaugural Kreminar series was well-received by AIHP members and participants around the world. Each lecture drew more than 85 registrants, and, overall, the Kreminar drew an audience from 20 countries, 105 cities, and 74 institutions.
